4.0 out of 5 stars New Mako not necessarily superior to the old one..., April 4, 2010

This review is from: Orient Men's Black Mako XL Automatic Dive Watch CEM75001B (Watch)
The Orient Mako has a great reputation among watch fans and it deserves to be a more widely known brand to the public at large. This watch, a redesign of the "entry level" Orient diver is meant to be a larger more fashionable design, and is a handsome watch. However, it has a few issues when compared to its cheaper first generation cousin (which is sold for 30% less list price, far more discounted) as of this writing.)

Orient is a small Japanese company that is partially owned by Seiko. They've been around for more than 50 years, and their claim to fame is that they are a mechanical watch producer that designs and makes 100% of their movements in-house. The in-house designation is significant as it means the company does more than just buy off the shelf designs but rather is directly involved in creating and tuning the mechanical heart of their product. Rolex is know for their in-house work, but even such costly brands as Omega, TAG Heuer, and Breitling have most of their... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Black Mako: a power watch on your hand., December 30, 2010

This review is from: Orient Men's Black Mako XL Automatic Dive Watch CEM75001B (Watch)
A typical description of the watch is: Orient automatic self-wind mech watch, solid screw in case (no transparent metal back, with Orient glyph on it), 60 clicks counter-clockwise one-way bezel with 60 to 10 minute points and rest in 5 mins interval markings, water resistant to 200M with flat crystal front, plus date and day in three laguages.
With a mini button on 10' that I'm sure you did not noticed (or you never thought this would be for changing the day (!!) and not some helium valve or something like this)

This watch has a character. The weight is indeed serious, and you really know you're wearing a good watch (which, by the way, did not cost you a fortune). The phosphorous is quite bright on all minute markings as well as on the hands, which (except of the seconds one) have a characteristic pointing arrow ending that I'm in love with.

As stated above, the little button outside the watch (at 10') is being used to change the day (Monday, Tuesday etc..)... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent timepiece, great value!, November 8, 2010
This review is from: Orient Men's Black Mako XL Automatic Dive Watch CEM75001B (Watch)
After reading many great reviews here (Mr. Kelleher) and on other watch sites, I Ordered the Orient Black Mako 2 or "Hogrider" as it is commonly referred to. I recently purchased a Citizen Eco Drive chronograph that is somewhat similar in appearance, but smaller. I wanted a second watch to wear around the house and do my chores in without the fear of scratching my Citizen. Kind of a "bang around" watch if you will. I had considered an Invicta, but the negative reviews steered me away.

Orient is not a popular or well known brand here, but I recall seeing them when I was stationed in Okinawa many moons ago. I didn't give this watch much thought then and did not even remotely consider one until now. Ironically, when I was doing research on the Invicta, it was compared to an Orient and my interest was sparked in this brand.

I also looked at a few cheaper models such as Armitron and Casio but wanted an automatic and a timepiece that would last a long time. Plus,... Read more
