4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful watch, but limited chrono functionality, May 12, 2011

This review is from: Citizen Men's CA0020-56E Eco Drive Titanium Watch (Watch)
Pros:
-Lightweight titanium.
-Sapphire face.
-Solar-powered Eco-Drive. Hopefully servicing won't be required for several years.
-Subdued look for a chronograph; from 2 feet away the subdials fade into the background of the face and does not interfere with reading of the time. You only notice the dials when you want to notice them. Very thin chrono second hand. All this = an extremely readable watch.
-Chrono second hand = 5 beats per second. It's no Bulova Precisionist, but it's a nice sweep for a quartz.

Chronograph cons:
-Limited to 60 minutes; no hour totalizer.
-Hands of minute subdial does not stop precisely on each minute. "Is that 22 or 23 minutes?"
-Stop/start only; no split time function.

-Face has this weird looking plastic film that reflects like a CD in bright light in some angles. Not apparent indoors. Might be semi-transparent for eco-drive functionality... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great watch... One major caveat, December 25, 2011
This review is from: Citizen Men's CA0020-56E Eco Drive Titanium Watch (Watch)
Love the way this watch looks feels and keeps time.
Super light due to the titanium construction.
Solar powered so you never have to take it in for battery replacement.
Moderately large face.
Band does not grab at your forearm hairs.
I've owned the watch for about a month now, sync'd with my radio controlled clock at home and only slow to half a second in one month.
The perfect work/everyday watch while keeping the nicer ones for special occasions.
Very satisfied with purchase.

My one caveat:

This watch will not keep the correct date for months shorter than 31 days and must be corrected in March, May, July, October, and December.
Check the manual on the Citizen website and see for yourself. Model and caliber is "B612"
Expected a +$300 watch to keep the correct date year-round.
Guess you can't have it all.

Thanks for reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Eco-Friendly Watch That Calculates Fuel Consumption, Speed, Arrival time etc...,, April 23, 2006

Sweet watch, I've been wearing mine for 4 months.

I'm an Environmental Engineering Student and I also currently own an Omega Speedmaster ($2100 graduation gift long ago) and a Titanium Pro-Trek Casio Triple Sensor Watch (Compass, Altimeter & Temperature $295.00) that I used for my previous job as an outdoors wilderness instructor.

Both those watches are extreme (the Casio being too rugged, big and bulky the Omega being very freaking expensive) for everyday use and wanted something that suited my keen personality, short budget and modern taste.

I never liked anything in terms of jewelry or watches from department stores or malls, but when I walked into MACY's during Christmas shopping last december at the local mall I saw these Eco-Drive watches for the first time.

It has always been my opinion that Citizen makes very old fashioned timepieces, yet the Nighthawk Eco-Drive is very different and far more classy than any other... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great watch but needs a stopwatch for aviators, September 29, 2005
By
Alexys (Anchorage, AK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Citizen Men's BJ7000-52E Eco-Drive Nighthawk Stainless Steel Watch (Watch)
Great watch:

looks great--I get a lot of comments
doesn't need a battery
fantastic layout--a lot of info at a glance: date, local & zulu times
luminous hands
slide rule easy to use and numbers won't rub out (like on external bezel ring slide rules)

However, for serious aviators:

no stopwatch! You will want a stopwatch to go with the slide rule for basic dead reckoning
you'll need another light source to read the slide rule if you're flying at night

also, the crown has an occasional tendency to work itself loose and you can lose your time hack if you don't tighten it every couple days

The closest I've seen to the elusive "perfect aviator's watch"

5.0 out of 5 stars Citizen - who'd have thought it?, December 7, 2005
This review is from: Citizen Men's BJ7000-52E Eco-Drive Nighthawk Stainless Steel Watch (Watch)
This is the first Citizen brand watch I've ever bought, and so far, it's as good or better quality than more expensive TAGs I've owned. About the only thing missing (aside from a stopwatch, as noted earlier - but that's debatable if you're not a serious aviator) is a sapphire crystal, which would probably prevent scratches a little better than the standard mineral crystal. For this price, though, I'm not complaining.

I like the layout, the overall appearance and something else nobody mentioned - the band clasp is a very smart design. Not only does it have something similar to the Rolex "Flip-Lock" clasp, but the main clasp has what can best be described as a squeeze lock, which must be pressed together from the sides of the band to release it from the wrist. This thing isn't coming off accidentally.

I got the stainless version, but there is a titanium one available as well as an all-black version. The all black version looked kinda cheap and the titanium... Read more

This review is from: Citizen Men's BM8475-00X Eco-Drive Military Black Plated Steel Canvas Strap Watch (Watch)
I considered this purchase from the viewpoint of an already satisfied Eco-Drive owner. My original Citizen features a titanium case and strap and is great for business attire. But I wanted a less formal watch for casual wear. This watch caught my eye, and it was love at first sight. The watch arrived after about five days, as advertised. Upon opening the box, I was taken aback by the size. This is a large-face watch, and I was expecting something about the size of my titanium case. I was considering returning it, then decided to give it a try and sell it on eBay if I didn't like it. As it turns out, I got used to it after a couple of days. The canvas strap became a little more pliable, which helped the watch stay in place better on my wrist, and the discomfort of the band disappeared. Now I can focus on enjoying the big face and oversized luminous digits, which glow extraordinarily bright when exposed to a light source at night. Like my original Eco-Drive, this watch keeps... This review is from: Citizen Men's BM8475-00X Eco-Drive Military Black Plated Steel Canvas Strap Watch (Watch)
I've been looking for another eco-drive with a clean face for everyday wear. I already own a Citizen Ti-zilla and love the toughness of the watch. I own several nice automatics but I find myself always having reset the watch when I do not wear them for a while. That is the great advantage of the eco-drive. As long as the watch is receiving light, it continues to run and keep great time.

I waited a couple of months to get this watch. When it first came out, I knew I wanted to order it. I am a fan of Flieger and military watches. As an active duty military member, I like tough watches which are easy to read. I also like having the day/date option especially for deployments when every day starts to feel like groundhog day. When I saw this watch, I knew it was the perfect combination. Some thoughts:

Size: at 42mm, the watch is big enough to easily read but not one of those grossly oversized watches. I enjoy larger face watches and this one is the right size... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Cheap crystal scratches and cracks far too easily., September 30, 2010
By

This review is from: Citizen Men's BM8475-00X Eco-Drive Military Black Plated Steel Canvas Strap Watch (Watch)
I really liked the watch, but the crystal scratched far too easily. After a few scratches, the watch later fell about 6" into a sink and the crystal became horribly cracked in many places. I returned the watch for repair to the Citizen Service headquarters and they informed me the repair would cost $102.49! The watch only cost me about $123 new. I will not buy any more Citizen watches until they do something about the chintzy mineral glass.
